EU and NRW are funding a nature conservation project to preserve our forest biodiversity.</p>

<p>Die bodenfeuchten Eichen-Hainbuchenwälder gehören zu den seltenen und stark gefährdeten Waldlebensräumen Europas. In den Villewälder sind sie noch auf großer Fläche anzutreffen und ihre langfristige Sicherung steht im Zentrum des Projektes. Dabei ist Alt- und Totholz für das Überleben vieler Tierarten von zentraler Bedeutung. Aus diesem Grund wird ein Teil der Altbäume in Zukunft nicht mehr forstlich genutzt, sondern verbleibt als wertvoller Lebensraum im Wald. Weiterhin wird der natürliche Wasserhaushalt der Wälder wiederhergestellt, um der Stiel-Eiche zukünftig optimale Lebensbedingungen zu bieten. Naturferne, monotone Nadelholzforste werden durch Pflanzung in Mischwälder aus heimischen Laubbaumarten umgewandelt. Kleingewässer und Grünlandflächen im Wald werden optimiert und vernetzt.</p>
<p>Das Projekt hat ein Gesamtbudget von 3,3 Millionen Euro, welches jeweils zur Hälfte von der Europäischen Union und dem Land Nordrhein-Westfalen finanziert wird. Die Projektkulisse umfasst eine Fläche von 4.378ha.</p>
